Background

Thechallenge

The UIC Office of Technology Management (OTM) came to Bizful Solutions on a referral from a previous client. Their challenge: clearly explaining their process, the people they help, and what they contribute to the university. They decided video was the best way to do it, and one video grew into a full year of work.

The goal: Show the mission, process and impact of the UIC Office of Technology Management, through one main video and a year of content built around the inventors they help.

What stood in the way

Complex story

Explaining technology transfer in a way anyone can understand, in a few minutes.

Many voices

Coordinating six inventors and business owners, each with their own schedule.

Many locations

Showing the team at work across labs, offices and meeting rooms on campus.

Our approach

What wedid

01Planning

  • Weekly planning meetings with the OTM team
  • Wrote the scenes, script and interview questions for every speaker
  • Chose inventors and founders from both life sciences and physical sciences

02Organizing the shoot

  • Two filming days on UIC's West and East campuses
  • Locations from the Library of the Health Sciences to the High-Bay Structures Lab
  • Scheduled every interview, location and permission

03Filming

  • Seven interviews in one day: the OTM director, inventors, faculty founders and the DEEP program
  • A second day with the OTM team, research labs, the engineering atrium and the patent wall
  • Lab and campus b-roll throughout

04Main video

  • An animated walk through the process: research, disclosure, evaluation, patents and licensing
  • Interviews, narration, graphics and music edited together with three OTM team members
  • Premiered at a major OTM event

05Inventor Spotlight series

  • A video for each featured inventor and program
  • On-screen questions and key facts in UIC colors
  • A graphic that shows where each technology is on its path to market

06Graphic animated explainer videos

  • Animated explainers that make complex ideas simple, like the clinical trial pipeline
  • The "valley of success": how research gets from the lab to the market
  • Lab and research footage woven in

07Social media reels

  • Vertical reels for Instagram and other social feeds
  • A branded Inventor Spotlight header and easy-to-read captions
  • A reel about the office itself, with an animated map
